After a detailed examination, periodontal charting and x-rays, scaling and root planing may be recommended to treat periodontal disease. The objective is to clean areas that are otherwise inaccessible with regular brushing and flossing. The pockets are often too deep to effectively access during a normal dental cleaning, and they may worsen if not addressed. The procedure can be performed by your dentist, hygienist, or periodontist. Dr. Brancheau is an instructor for UW dental students and residents and has extensive experience in performing comfortable and effective cleanings for patients. The goal is to return the pockets to a healthy level that can be then cleaned routinely with brushing, flossing and regular prophylaxis in the dental office.
The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia to ensure there is no discomfort. An ultrasonic scaler is used to remove plaque, bacteria and tartar from the root surfaces, and hand instruments are used to clean all of the deep pockets. A quadrant usually takes about 45 minutes to be done thoroughly, and 2 quadrants can be done per visit. Polishing and smoothing of the teeth is performed to remove any stains and improve the appearance. We also provide detailed instruction on oral hygiene and make individualized home care recommendations.
After the cleaning, you will be scheduled for a 4-6 week reevaluation. This time frame allows for good oral hygiene practices to take effect and the gums to heal and reattach to the tooth. If successful, the pockets will improve to a healthier depth, and there will be less bleeding and an improved appearance. You will then be placed on a periodontal maintenance program. If there are still areas of concern, periodontal maintenance will help address these areas. In more severe cases, periodontal surgery will be recommended.
Scaling and root planing is often the first step in addressing and controlling periodontal disease. Dr. Brancheau and our team hope to work with you and your general dentist to facilitate a treatment plan that will help prevent gum disease from progressing and maintain healthy teeth over a lifetime. Please see sections on Periodontal Maintenance and Periodontal Surgery for more information.
