The specialty of Periodontics has pioneered research and innovative techniques used in modern dentistry including regenerating lost tissue and bone around teeth. While conventional periodontal therapies are still viable, regeneration of lost tissue and bone may be an option for some patients. Dr. Brancheau has extensive training and research background in guided regeneration, and will discuss whether this method of periodontal disease treatment is right for you. In all cases, a deep cleaning and periodontal maintenance is recommended as a first approach.
If surgery is recommended, GTR can be a preferable alternative to pocket reduction surgery. The concept of regeneration is to regain lost tissue and bone through a combination of bone grafting materials, proteins, and membranes. The procedure is very much similar to standard periodontal surgery, and takes 45 minutes to one hour and is performed under local anesthesia. It is often times less invasive and more comfortable than more traditional techniques. The grafting material is placed into the periodontal defect, proteins and a membrane are added, and the tissue sutured in place. You will be seen for a 2 week post-op to assess healing and remove sutures. In 6 months, a post-op radiograph is taken to assess the bone and evaluate results.
