Dental implants are essentially tooth root replacements made of a titanium alloy, which is implanted in the jaw bone. The process is divided into the 4 steps: surgery, healing phase, restoration and maintenance.
- Implant Placement - A small incision is made and the implant post is placed under local anesthesia. Often, no sutures are even needed. You will be on a soft diet with gentle brushing in the area for 2 weeks. We will then see you for a post-op appointment to evaluate healing and review the next step.
- Healing Phase - The implant post will integrate to the surrounding bone over a period of about 3 months. In cases of additional bone grafting or sinus augmentation, it may take up to 6 months for the bone to solidify. A healing cap may be present which sits just above the gumline, or in other cases the implant will rest under the gum tissue and be uncovered just prior to the restoration.
- Restoration - After the implant is integrated, your dentist will take an impression for the abutment and crown to be delivered. The implant is now ready for full function. Occasionally, a temporary crown may be used to help mold the gum tissue prior to the final crown for esthetic cases.
- Maintenance - Implants need to be cleaned much like teeth do, and regular brushing and flossing will be reviewed. It is also recommended to see a hygienist once every 6 months to clean around the implant to ensure long-term health.
