Why Should I See a Periodontist?

A Periodontist receives 3 additional years of training after dental school in gum disease diagnosis and treatment, as well as advanced training in dental implants, bone grafting and gum grafting. They are experts in these type of procedures and trained to be as gentle and minimally invasive as possible.

Will there be discomfort?

Your initial exam will be done with little to no discomfort. Procedures can also be done gently and comfortably, and we will do everything we can to help you have the best experience possible.

Do I need X-rays?

We will need to take periodontal radiographs of the teeth and bone to accurately diagnose your condition. Radiographs can be sent from your dentist so that we have as much information as possible and minimize additional exposures. We exclusively use digital x-rays.

Do I need a 3D Scan?

For dental implants as well as bone grafting, a 3D CBCT scan is recommended to fully diagnose the area, check for safety from nerves and other vital structures, and help guide the ideal placement of implant and bone.

What will it cost?

Each treatment plan is individualized based on your referral and needs. The fee for periodontal and implant treatment can vary considerably depending on the case. We will do our best to give you a detailed estimate of your treatment plan from start to finish as well as timeline.

Will Insurance Cover My Treatment?

Periodontal treatment is often a covered benefit with dental insurance companies. Implants, bone grafting and gum grafting can vary. Please bring all dental and medical insurance cards to your exam appointment. We will help you to maximize your benefits and give you an understanding of your out-of-pocket costs.

Will I need Surgery?

Many cases of periodontal disease respond well to non-surgical therapy, and we aim to be as conservative as possible. In other cases surgery is the best way to help you save teeth, restore function and achieve optimal esthetics. Our recommendations will be based on your individual situation and treatment goals.

When will I go back to see my General Dentist?

As soon as possible! We want to be a team-player in your treatment and make sure that your other dental needs are being met: fillings, crowns, implant crowns, regular cleanings, etc. We will develop a plan with your dentist and other specialists as needed to coordinate visits and keep you informed.

Can I Delay Treatment?

We understand that you may need more time to consider your options. In general however, untreated periodontal disease, infections and broken/missing teeth can lead to more long-term complications and higher costs if not treated early. We will strive to give you an honest assessment of your dental needs including risks and benefits over the short and long-term so you are well informed.
